How to Make Your Mattress Last Longer: 3 Simple Fixes
Three Simple Ways to Make Your Mattress Last Longer
We spend eight hours a night on our mattresses but give more attention to the battery health of our phones.
If you’d like to postpone mattress shopping for a little while longer, there are three ridiculously simple ways to make your current mattress last longer. Rotate it, protect it, or just upgrade it the right foundation. A little routine goes a long way!
1. Rotate Your Mattress
Your mattress has a favorite side. It's wherever you sleep every night.
Rotating it 180 degrees every three to six months helps distribute wear more evenly and can keep it comfortable longer. Think of it as a tire rotation, minus the waiting room coffee.
Rotate it 180 degrees, head to foot, on a regular schedule. Bob's recommends rotating all mattresses monthly, or at least every 3-6 months, for more even wear (check out our Bedding & Mattress FAQs).
And remember:
- Rotate it. Don't flip it. Most modern mattresses have a softer comfort layer on top and a firmer core underneath, so they're built to stay right side up.
- Pick a schedule and stick with it. A regularly rotated mattress may outlast one that never gets turned, potentially by a year or more.
2. Protect Your Mattress
A mattress protector is the easiest way to keep spills, dust and dust mites out of your mattress.
Spend your Saturdays sipping coffee in bed? Don't let stains get you down. Accidental stains can void your mattress warranty, so a protector is cheap insurance. Have a look our full collection of mattress and pillow protectors.
3. Update your Bed Frame
A mattress needs a base with an appropriate frame and center support to last, and a worn or mismatched base can leave you with a sagging bed.
The propper frame, foundation, or bed can improve support and completely change the look of your bedroom. Same mattress. Different vibe. Or, update to a power base, which is also designed to properly support a mattress.
When Is It Actually Time for a New Mattress?
If you're waking up sore, noticing sagging, or sleeping in a strange diagonal position because there's only one comfortable spot left, it may be time to start shopping. But you'd be surprised how often the three fixes above can buy you a little more time. When you're ready, take a look at our mattresses.
The Bottom Line
Your mattress has quietly supported thousands of nights of sleep, lazy Sunday mornings, and more than a few "I'll just close my eyes for five minutes" naps. Return the favor.
Rotate it. Protect it. Frame it.
They're simple, affordable ways to extend the life of your mattress and improve your sleep — until it’s time to find your next great mattress at Bob’s.
