How to Host the Perfect Game Night

September 6, 2023

Want to break out of your usual dinner party routine? Need a new IRL activity for the group chat? Tired of making the same small talk over and over again (wow that’s a great golf score!!)? Why not host an unforgettable game night?!

So how do you win at hosting game night? Follow along for a few simple fall entertaining tips that will have your guests raring for a rematch!

1. Curate Your Cocktail Hour

The first step to hosting a successful game night is to provide your guests with a full selection of cocktails (or mocktails!) to get everyone’s competitive juices flowing. In addition to assembling a savory charcuterie board and picking a few of your favorite wines to enjoy at your Bettie 7-Piece Dining Set or Bettie 5-Piece Round Dining Set, mix up a batch of cozy apple butter old fashioned cocktails courtesy of the Simply Happy Foodie.

You’ll need:

  • 2 oz Bourbon (we like Buffalo Trace)
  • ¼ cup Apple Cider
  • 2 shakes Angostura Bitters
  • Ice
  • Sugar Rim for Glass
  • 2 Tbsp Coarse Sugar (or sugar/brown sugar mix)
Glass of orange-colored cocktail garnished with a rosemary sprig, placed on a brown leather coaster on a wooden table.

Here’s how to prepare:

  1. Sugar the rim of the glass by holding the glass upside down and dipping the glass in apple cider about ½ inch. Then dip in coarse sugar, or a sugar/brown sugar mix. Set aside.
  2. Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker.
  3. Add ice and shake for 20-30 seconds.
  4. Pour over large ice cubes in an old fashioned glass.
  5. Garnish with a cinnamon stick and thinly sliced apple

Enjoy your beverages with a quick warm up round of gin rummy to kick off the evening!

2. Let the Games Begin

Once your guests have gotten their heads in the game (night), move the party over to the living room for the main event. Gather around the coffee table, or divide into groups if you are playing team games.

Interactive party games like Charades will get your guests on their feet. A game of Pictionary will unleash your inner artist. Or if you’re a mystery-loving sofa sleuth play Mafia!

If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, classic card games like Spades, War, Dutch, & Spit are great choices too!

3. Snack Break

By now you’ve no doubt worked up an appetite – so take a break and set up a snack plate of pistachio and date ricotta crostinis and rosemary roasted cashews on a Bob’s coffee table – perfect for enjoying some bites without ever leaving the couch.

Searching for something to wet your whistle? Try a Champion’s Cup – otherwise known as 2 parts grapefruit to 1 part vodka, a splash of club soda, and an orange wedge to garnish.

4. Dessert and Dream

As your night winds down, cap things off with a delicious Apple Bettie to serve up a sweet ending (no matter who won!). Bonus points if you celebrate your successful game night gathered around my mid-century Bettie Dining set!
