FAQs

The size of the kitchen island you select will depend on the space you have for it. Generally, there should be at least 3 feet of space around a stationary island in the middle of the kitchen. Kitchen islands on wheels give you some leeway since you can move them more easily.

Measure the space where you intend to place your kitchen island and subtract 6 feet from the width to determine how much room is left over. This will give you an idea of the maximum size you should select. Kitchen islands can be anywhere from 15 to 35 inches deep and 22 to 60 inches wide, so you’re sure to find one that’s a fit for your space. If you decide that your kitchen is too small for a large kitchen island, opt for a small kitchen cart instead.

Futons typically last about five to 10 years depending on use. That’s a great value when you consider a mattress should be replaced every seven to 10 years and couches last between seven to 15 years, but can cost a lot more. As with any piece of furniture, proper care and maintenance of your futon will help prolong its lifespan.

Yes, a futon should ideally be used with a cover. Similar to a regular mattress, using a futon cover provides an extra layer of protection between yourself and a bare mattress. You can also add a sheet over the cover for even more comfort and protection.

If you have a futon couch that’s a convertible style where the cushions act as the mattress, you probably won’t want a cover on it full time. However, you should still add a cover or sheet when it’s time for someone to sleep on it.
