The standard height for desks is actually the same as dining tables—about 30 inches. This can vary by a few inches depending on the desk you select, so be sure to check the product dimensions. If you’re worried about your office desk being too low, keep in mind that traditional office chairs are typically adjustable in height. Plus, you can always use risers for both the desk and your computer equipment to get the perfect height on the home office desk of your choice!

When it comes to organizing and decorating your desk, the focus should be on productivity. Minimize the number of items visible on your workspace by stashing them in drawers and on shelves to help eliminate potential distractions. For office supplies you prefer to leave out, choose stylish options that enhance the décor. In a perfect world, we would all have our own dedicated office. In reality, that home office may not exist yet or you may not have enough space for it. There’s nothing wrong with having a bedroom desk if that’s where you happen to have the space.

To help differentiate your sleep space from your workspace, try to place your room desk in a spot where it doesn’t face the bed so you can stay focused (without temptation to curl up for a nap)!

If you don’t have one already, develop a daily routine of starting the day by making your bed and picking up the room to further ensure you stay on task and aren’t stopping throughout the day for quick chores that eat away at your work time. When it’s bedtime, be sure to turn off your monitor for a nice sound sleep!

Consider your personal work style when deciding where to place a work desk in your home office. If you’re easily distracted, putting your desk in a corner or facing a wall can help minimize visual disruptions. If you need inspiration to get the job done, placing your desk by a window can be helpful.

If you operate a business out of your home office and have visitors, placing your desk in the middle of the room facing the door might be best for hosting clients or collaborators, especially when paired with a warm and welcoming area rug.

You’ll also want to consider the amount of space you need behind your office chair when deciding where to place your desk. Leave about 36 inches or more between your chair and the wall or other pieces of furniture to give yourself enough space to sit at the desk and pull out your chair. Lastly, don’t forget to ensure that you have electrical outlets nearby!
