MANCHESTER, Conn. - Jan. 10, 2015 – Bob’s Discount Furniture today announced it will contribute $30,000 to charitable organizations and schools in the Greater Philadelphia area to celebrate the opening of its three newest furniture stores there. Scheduled for grand openings on February 12, these stores will bring Bob’s high-quality, affordable home furnishings to a wider audience of area residents, while adding 92 new jobs to the local economy.
The new stores, their locations and managers are:
• Northeast Philadelphia. This 30,500-square-foot store at 7301 Castor Ave. is located in the newly refurbished Cottman and Castor shopping center. It will be managed by Noah Abbassi, a 5-year Bob’s employee who started in sales and worked his way into store management.
• Langhorne, Penn. This 29,728-square-foot store at 1501 East Lincoln Highway is located between Trenton and Philadelphia, just off the Delaware Expressway (I-95) in the Langhorne Shopping Center. It will be managed by Jonathan Friedman, who joined Bob’s a year ago with a background in retail sales management.
• Deptford, N.J. This 38,000-square-foot store at 1561 Almonesson Road is located across the Delaware River from Philadelphia just south of the New Jersey Turnpike in the Deptford Mall. It will be managed by Jeff Golden, a veteran retail manager who helped Bob’s break into the Philadelphia-area market last year at the company’s new King of Prussia store.
With these openings, Bob’s now has seven stores employing more than 240 people in the Greater Philadelphia area, including locations that opened last year in Springfield and King of Prussia, Penn., as well as Cherry Hill, N.J., and Wilmington, Del. Bob’s also opened another Pennsylvania store in Wilkes-Barre last August. "We’re thrilled by the reception we’ve received in and around the Philadelphia area," said Kevin Parker, zone vice president for Bob’s Discount Furniture. "Consumers tell us they appreciate the quality, choice and value of our furniture offerings, as well as the convenience of having more of our stores to choose from."
After opening more than a dozen new stores during the past two years, Bob’s will now have 57 stores in 11 states across the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic regions, with additional expansion planned for 2015. "We definitely see further opportunities for growth," said Bob Kaufman, Bob’s president emeritus and co-founder. "And as we grow, we intend to continue supporting schools, charities and other worthwhile causes in each of the communities where we operate."
Grand opening celebrations for the three new stores will start at 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12, with local dignitaries and Bob’s executives on hand for each of the ribbon cutting ceremonies. Kaufman will be at the Castor Ave. store in northeast Philadelphia, Bob’s Public Relations Director Cathy Poulin will be at the Langhorne, Penn., store and Bob’s President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Skirvin will attend the Deptford, N.J. store opening.
The festivities will extend through the weekend at all three new store locations and at the existing Philadelphia-area and Wilkes-Barre stores. Free children’s entertainment will be provided, along with the usual complimentary refreshments – including gourmet coffee, ice cream, cookies and candy – that are available every day from the cafes in all Bob’s stores. Balloon clowns and face painters will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, through Monday, Feb 16, at the three new stores. The four other Philadelphia-area Bob’s stores, as well as the Wilkes-Barre store, will offer balloon clowns or face painting Thursday through Monday at those same times.
Several former Philadelphia Eagles players, including Bill Bergey, Vaughn Hebron, Jamaal Jackson, Dan Klecko, Mike Mamula, Quintin Mikell and William Thomas will also appear at several of Philadelphia stores on the afternoons of Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Feb. 14-16, from 1-3 p.m. See Bob’s Schedule of Events page for more information.
To show its support for the communities where it is expanding, the company’s Bob’s Outreach philanthropic program will present checks totaling $30,000 to 21 local non-profit organizations and schools prior to the new stores’ openings. The selected recipients are:
Philadelphia – $2,500 each to Science Leadership Academy High School and Thomas Holme Elementary school, and $1,000 each to Chamounix Equestrian Center, Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, Turning Points for Children, Drueding Center and Trevor’s Place Family Shelter.
Langhorne – $2,500 each to Neshaminy High School and Our Lady of Grace School, and $1,000 each to Harvest Ministries Food Pantry, Woodbourne Animal Clinic, Baabun Nasr, Bike & Build and Langhorne Little League. Bob’s will present an additional $1,000 after the ribbon-cutting ceremony to Langhorne’s Detective Christopher Jones Foundation, which provides scholarships to young people studying criminal justice, in memory of Detective Jones, who lost his life in the line of duty in 2009.
Deptford – $2,500 each to St. Patrick’s Catholic School and Deptford Township High School, and $1,000 each to Ebenezer Mission, Center for Family Services, Pet Savers, Laurelwood S.D.A. Community Services and ChemoClothes.
"Bob’s is committed to being a good neighbor," said Cathy Poulin, public relations director, Bob’s Discount Furniture, "and as we expand into the Greater Philadelphia area, we look forward to becoming a valued partner for the schools and non-profit organizations serving the communities here."
