Moving Tips and Tricks
Whether you’re switching dorms before a new semester starts, or you’ve just signed a new lease or bought a new home, moving can be challenging. With so much to keep track of, proper preparation and organization can be key to ensuring the easiest move possible.
Here are a few tips to help make your next move your easiest:
Pack in order of need and by room. Pack the items you need for everyday life last, so you have them grouped together for easy access once you’re in your new home. Pack these items in clear plastic containers or add an inventory list to the outside of the box so you can quickly identify which items are in each box. Packing and labeling your boxes by room is also very helpful to let the movers (and you!) know which boxes go in which rooms.
Use what you have. Do you have a cherished glass bottle collection and a lot of spare blankets and towels? Use the soft stuff to protect the fragile stuff, but make sure that you don’t overstuff the boxes because this could still result in lots of broken glass. Don’t stop with the big stuff, either. If you have a lot of glassware, use socks, t-shirts or sweatshirts to protect it.
Plan ahead. If possible, visit your new place before moving in and clean; cleaning an empty space is much easier than cleaning around boxes and furniture. Make sure to pack your kitchen and bathroom essentials in easily accessible, clearly marked boxes. A few place settings, cups and utensils, along with your most used pan and cooking utensils will ensure you can easily prepare meals in the first few days. As for the bathroom, make sure to pack a few rolls of toilet paper, a shower curtain and a towel or two so you can shower after a long day of moving. Pack an overnight bag with some key essentials like toothpaste and a toothbrush, eyeglasses or contacts and solution, pajamas and a change of clothes so you don’t have to sort through boxes on the day of the move.
Photograph the set-up. Save yourself tons of time and frustration by taking pictures of your electronics (the connections) before you disassemble and pack them. Set-up in your new home will be a breeze with the photos as a reference!
