Bob’s Kicks Off ‘Rocking the Road to Read’ Initiative
Bob’s Outreach recently kicked off a year-long “Rocking the Road to Read” initiative, in partnership with the Reach Out and Read program, to increase early literacy by bringing smiles and books to local children’s hospitals. The program was launched at the CCMC School in New Britain, Conn., part of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, on March 2, 2015, which was National Read Across America Day as well as the 111th birthday of Dr. Seuss author Theodor Seuss Geisel.
To support the initiative, Bob’s Outreach presented a $10,000 check to Reach Out and Read. Best-selling children’s author Tish Rabe entertained the students by reading aloud “Oh the Things You Can Do That Are Good for You!,” one of her recently updated books in the Cat in The Hat Learning Library series of rhyming science books for early readers. After the reading, each child at the school was given their own new copy of the book, donated by Bobs Outreach.
Bob’s also donated copies of Tish Rabe’s newest book, “Love You, Hug You, Read to You” to the Reach Out and Read program at Connecticut Children’s.
Bob’s Outreach team plans to visit several other children’s hospitals and clinics throughout the year for additional book readings and giveaway events. The next visit is being scheduled for April in Pittsburgh, to be followed by stops in Baltimore, Boston, and beyond. “We hope to not only bring smiles to these children’s faces, but share our love for reading,” says Cathy Poulin, public relations director for Bob’s Discount Furniture.
