{"id":7231,"date":"2024-04-18T16:40:31","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T20:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/?p=7231"},"modified":"2025-08-11T14:27:32","modified_gmt":"2025-08-11T18:27:32","slug":"bens-wish-i-wish-for-a-place-to-hang-with-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mybobs.com\/blog\/bens-wish-i-wish-for-a-place-to-hang-with-friends\/","title":{"rendered":"Ben\u2019s Wish: I Wish for a Place to Hang with Friends"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ben, a 13-year-old, from Southington Connecticut, tried out nearly every recliner available at his local Bob\u2019s Discount Furniture store until he found just the right one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we have winner,\u201d Ben exclaimed, choosing the Nexus power lift recliner with heat and massage features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After selecting the perfect recliner, Ben continued his shopping trip, hosted by Bob\u2019s and Make-A-Wish Connecticut, to select several more pieces of furniture to complete his billiards room makeover.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-10-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Benswish-10\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-13-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Benswish-13\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-29-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Benswish-29\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-5-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Benswish-5\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben is not only a survivor of a rare type of brain cancer, but he has also spent one month on life support and nearly a year in the hospital after sustaining a life-threating incident during a routine medical procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tearing up as she recalls the events, Ben\u2019s mother Stacy, said she\u2019s extremely grateful to be where they are today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watching Ben shop for furniture, she commented, \u201cI am so happy to see this come to fruition for him. He defied all the odds. He\u2019s still rehabbing and it\u2019s a long journey, but he takes it all in stride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben\u2019s wish was to have his own recreation space to hang out with his friends, play pool, and just be a kid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stacy and her husband Brian converted their garage into Ben\u2019s new space, which is easy for him to access due to his limited mobility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe\n  src='https:\/\/player.cloudinary.com\/embed\/?cloud_name=mybobs&#038;secure_distribution=res.cloudinary.com%2Fmybobs&#038;private_cdn=true&#038;public_id=tyfwvinoytz14ig3ycuj&#038;profile=cld-adaptive-stream'\n  width='640'\n  height='360'\n  style='height: auto; width: 100%; aspect-ratio: 640 \/ 360;'\n  allow='autoplay; fullscreen; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture'\n  allowfullscreen\n  frameborder='0'\n><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben had a clear vision for the room overhaul and Wish Granter\/Designer, Ashley Drakeley came through to help with the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBen\u2019s the best,\u201d laughed Ashley. \u201cHe\u2019s wise beyond his years to say the least and he knows what he wants, which as a designer, is a wonderful trait for someone to have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben likes the color red, explained Ashley, so they launched their design from there and brought in elements of leather finishes and bar lighting to give the room a billiards feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A volunteer for Make-A-Wish, Ashley operates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winsome-studio.com\/\">Winsome Studio<\/a>, an interior design business, in addition to her fulltime job at ESPN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walking through Bob\u2019s, Ben and Ashley worked together to select the perfect fireplace for the space. The next item on the list was selecting a sleeper sofa so Ben\u2019s friends could stay over \u2013 this was a must-have for him. Planning game nights with his friends, Ben chose the Bob-O-Pedic Pop Up Sleeper to finish off the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think what he wants is the experience the room will give him,\u201d said Ashley, \u201cand by being part of picking the furniture and every aspect of it, he knows it\u2019s his room and that it gets to be his sanctuary and ultimately, who doesn\u2019t wish for that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reveal Day: A Celebration with Friends<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Neighbors, friends, and family joined the Make-A-Wish Connecticut team to welcome Ben to his new space in late March. Just as his electronic dartboard was hung and the throw blankets tucked into his sofa, Ben burst through the door with a look of awe and surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Wish Coordinator Kailani Gadlin exclaimed, \u201cHappy Wish Day Ben!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ben made a beeline to his new recliner and with his feet up he announced, \u201cI think I might sleep here!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image gallery-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-38-1-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-38-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image gallery-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-92-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-92-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image gallery-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-31.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-31.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image gallery-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-49.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.mybobs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Benswish-49.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe love to support Make-A-Wish Connecticut room makeovers,\u201d said Lindsay Ruszczyk, Communications and Community Outreach Director for Bob\u2019s Discount Furniture. \u201cThe look on Ben\u2019s face when he tried out his new furniture from Bob\u2019s, is truly a priceless gift to our organization.
