Through donations made in our on-the-house cafes from January through March, and a dollar-for-dollar match, Bob’s presented $47,500 to the Special Olympics.</p><p>Athletes from Special Olympics Minnesota visited Bob’s new Burnsville store to accept the donation.</p><p>“We’re incredibly grateful to Bob’s Discount Furniture for their continued commitment to inclusion and support of our athletes,” said Kaitlyn Mack, Corporate Relations Manager, Special Olympics Minnesota. “Through their Café Collection campaign, Bob’s is helping create more opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities in our community and beyond.”</p> </div>

<p>Since partnering in 2014, Bob’s has contributed over $600,000 to the Special Olympics.</p><p>“We’re so grateful to our guests for helping us to make this donation to Special Olympics,” said Lindsay Ruszczyk, Communications, Community Outreach and PR Director. “We are also so proud of our employees for volunteering at area events and participating in numerous Polar Plunge events, helping us to contribute is ways that connect us to the communities we serve.”</p><p>Special Olympics Minnesota hosted their Summer Games at the University of Minnesota in June and will be home to the USA Games in 2026.</p> </div>

<p>“B-O-B-S Bob’s! Bob’s! Bob’s! rang out from the plunge platform as Bob’s Discount Furniture employees prepared for the Special Olympics DC Polar Plunge on February 24th. Bob’s Discount Furniture store manager and plunge team captain Maurice Mckisset leapt into the chilly waters alongside Special Olympics DC athlete, Lindsey Wilkes.</p>
<p>“Participating in the plunge and fundraising was an amazing experience for the Bob’s team,” said Maurice Mckisset, “but creating a friendship with Linsey is the gift that keeps on giving.”</p>
<p>Lindsey is a <a style="font-size: 12pt; text-align: var(--text-align);" href="https://specialolympicsdc.org/sports/games-and-competitions/hall-of-fame/">Special Olympics DC Hall of Fame Inductee</a> and has been competing in sports activities with the group for more than 30 years.</p>

<p>In addition to participating in Polar Plunge events, Bob’s is fundraising for Special Olympics as part of the <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/10-years-of-support-for-special-olympics/">Café Collection for a Cause partnership</a>. Now through March 31st, guests can stop in any Bob’s store and donate to support their local chapter of Special Olympics. Bob’s matches donations dollar-for-dollar up to $75,000. Since partnering in 2014, Bob’s has contributed more than $500,000 to support Special Olympics.</p>
<p>“This year Bob’s is celebrating our 10-year-anniversiary supporting Special Olympics,” said Lindsay Ruszczyk, Bob’s Discount Furniture Communications and Community Outreach Director. “We’re so excited to amplify our support by contributing over $10,000 to kickstart our store plunge teams. Knowing how dedicated our employees are to our mission of supporting the community, we are not surprised they raised even more funds and created so many lasting friendships.”</p>
<p>Mary Beth McMahon, President & CEO of Special Olympics Massachusetts expressed her sincere appreciation for Bob’s longtime commitment to support Special Olympics, “Bob’s commitment to inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities has been expressed through their support of Special Olympics for ten years! <p>Bob’s Café Collection for a Cause to benefit Special Olympics will support more than five million athletes and one million coaches and volunteers in more than 170 countries. Special Olympics provides opportunities for athletes in the 171 communities where Bob’s has stores.</p>

<p>“Bob’s is thrilled to celebrate a decade of support for Special Olympics,” said Lindsay Ruszczyk, Director of Communications and Community Outreach. “Our Café Collection fundraising enables us to make meaningful contributions to support the programs of Special Olympics in the communities we serve. Additionally, our partnership with Special Olympics has enriched the lives of our employees through volunteerism and beyond.”</p>
<p>Since 2014, Bob’s has supported Special Olympics through financial giving and volunteerism. Recently Bob’s surpassed <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/milestone-moment-for-bobs-and-special-olympics/">$500,000</a> in donations to the organization. </p>
<p>In addition to financial contributions, Bob’s employees have taken part in fundraising through <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/little-bobsters-raise-over-5k-for-special-olympics/">Polar Plunge</a> events across the nation and have volunteered at Special Olympics Winter Games and Summer Games to support athletes.</p>

<p>Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.</p>

<p>Mary Beth McMahon, President & CEO of Special Olympics Massachusetts expressed her sincere appreciation, “A Decade! Bob’s commitment to inclusion for individuals with intellectual disabilities has been expressed through their support of Special Olympics for ten years! <p>The Café Collection fundraising helps to support 100,000 competitions and the 32 Olympic-type sports of Special Olympics.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Bob’s Commitment to Volunteerism</h2>
<p>During the winter season, Bob’s employees located near the Manchester, Conn., home office, have volunteered at the annual Special Olympics Winter Games, featuring events like cross-county skiing, snowshoeing and downhill skiing. This past year, Bob’s employee Alexa Lotufo earned four gold medals during the winter games with colleagues cheering her on.</p>

<p>Bob’s employee Chuck Yenker, who works in the Southington, Conn., location is a longtime Connecticut Special Olympics athlete. This past summer he traveled to Berlin, Germany to compete in the World Games.</p>

<p>Special Olympics athletes have a strong bond with Bob’s store teams. During the annual Café Collection for a Cause fundraising campaign, athletes are often seen visiting Bob’s showrooms to share about the organization. Global messengers for Special Olympics have inspired Bob’s employees to form Penguin Plunge teams and to volunteer for sports activities.</p>

<p>New Hampshire athlete <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/the-heart-of-a-champion/">Eric Retelle</a> visited a Bob’s store in 2020, prompting store manager Melissa Ortins to plunge for Special Olympics. Since organizing her team, the “Little Bobsters,” Ortins has raised more than $24,000 for the organization.</p>
<p>“Special Olympics touches so many lives of people who have disabilities,” Retelle said upon visiting with the Bob’s team in 2022. The power of playing sports can make getting through life, easier, Retelle added.</p>
<p>“I am grateful that Bob’s and Special Olympics provided our store team the opportunity to learn about volunteering and fundraising,” said Ortins. “It feels great to support Special Olympics both in the workplace during our Café Collections campaign and outside when we are plunging in chilly waters!”</p>

<p>April is Global Volunteer Month and Bob’s is thrilled to celebrate our employees and the ways they’ve given back this year.</p>
<p>Bob’s team members have volunteered with Community Outreach partners like Operation Homefront and Special Olympics enriching these longstanding relationships.</p>
<p>Employees have rolled up their sleeves to build with Habitat for Humanity and participated in a local park clean-up.</p>
<p>Beyond the workplace, Bob’s employees have given their time and talents to support needs in their own communities.</p>
<p>We’re honored to celebrate our team for all they do and say, ‘Thanks for being the best part of Bobs!’</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Supporting Partners</h2>
<p>In November 2022, more than 150 employees gathered at Bob’s headquarters in Manchester, Connecticut to pack more than 20,000 meals for <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/bobs-discount-furniture-committed-to-a-season-of-hunger-relief/">U.S. Hunger</a>. U.S. Hunger was the recipient of Bob’s Café Collection for a Cause fundraising earlier in the year.</p>

<p>Later in the month, a smaller group of employees gathered at the U.S. Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown, Connecticut to pack <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/holiday-meals-for-the-military/">Holiday Meals for the Military</a> for Café Collection partner, Operation Homefront.</p>

<p>In the winter of 2023, Bob’s employees volunteered at the Connecticut Special Olympics Winter Games. Employees were able to spend time with athletes and cheer on fellow employee Alexa Lotufo in snowshoeing and Chuck Yenkner in alpine skiing.</p>

<p>Continuing support of Special Olympics, a team of employees from Manchester, New Hampshire participated in the Polar Plunge raising $7,200 for the organization. They have been plunging as a team for <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/little-bobsters-raise-over-5k-for-special-olympics/">four years</a> and have raised more than $20,000.</p>

<p>Bob’s has partnered with Habitat for Humanity to donate furniture in the past but it was real work this spring when 12 Bob’s female executives were able to participate in <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/bobs-builds-with-habitat-for-humanity-on-international-womens-day/">Women Build 2023</a>. Together, the all-female volunteer team participated in construction duties at a housing site with Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut.</p>

<p>Later in the spring, a small team of Bob’s employees volunteered to help pack 10,000 Period Kits for girls supported by the <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/bobs-dei-resource-group-celebrates-womens-history-month-with-the-wonderfund/">Wonderfund</a> in Massachusetts.</p>

<p>Bob’s is honored to learn about employee who give back to their communities across America. One way we share the news about these unique individuals is through the employee recognition program <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/heart-of-bobs">Heart of Bob’s</a>.</p>
<p>When he’s on the clock, <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/employees-with-the-heart-of-bobs/">Jorge Alcantar</a> is an Operations Manager in a Bob’s Discount Furniture distribution center in San Bernardino CA. When the work day is done, Jorge is just getting started on his passion project as the President of <a href="https://newbreathoflifeministries.org/">New Breath of Life Ministries</a>, a charity supporting temporary housing and other basic needs for families in the Los Angeles area and beyond. Jorge truly represents the best of Bobs.</p>

<p>A Retail Guest Support Lead in Bob’s New London, Connecticut store, <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/heart-of-bobs-celebrating-fun-community-and-service/">Danielle Middleton</a> also has a special talent she uses to help others when she’s not working. Danielle has crocheted hundreds of winter caps and mittens for the homeless or under privileged in her community.</p>

<p>The Bob’s Café Collection for a Cause to benefit Special Olympics will support more than five million athletes and one million coaches and volunteers in more than 170 countries. Special Olympics provides opportunities for athletes in the 165 communities where Bob’s has stores.</p>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Special Olympics Impact</h2>
<p>According to their mission statement, Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, prepare for entry into school and community programs, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympic athletes and the community.</p>

<p>Since 2014, Bob’s has supported Special Olympics supplying financial giving and volunteerism. Last year, through the contributions of generous guests, Bob’s was able to surpass <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/milestone-moment-for-bobs-and-special-olympics/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$500,000</a> in donations.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Games</h2>
<p>Every year, fundraising supports the 100,000 competitions and 32 Olympic-type sports of Special Olympics. This summer, across America, athletes will compete in Summer Games in a variety of sports like track and field events, swimming, and tennis. Some athletes will travel to Germany for the 2023 World Games.</p>
<p>Bob’s is proud to share that longtime employee<a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/meet-the-handle-doctor/"> Chuck Yenkner</a> of the Southington, Connecticut location will compete in Berlin this June. He has taken part in Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015, winning a gold medal in the mini javelin, bronze in the 100M run and a ribbon in the 4x100M relay. </p>

<p>Tina Yenkner, Chuck’s mother, said Special Olympics has given her son a good sense of community and a big social circle of friends and family to spend time with.</p>
<p>“I think [Special Olympics] makes him feel good about himself and his accomplishments,” said Tina. “It provides him opportunities that he wouldn’t see otherwise in regular sports.”</p>
<p>Year-round, Bob’s employees participate in a variety of Special Olympics activities. Alexa Lotufo, Mailroom Clerk at Bob’s Manchester, Connecticut-based headquarters is an avid snowshoe racer who took home four gold medals in the Winter Games held in Connecticut this past March.</p>

<p>It’s become something of a routine over the past few years for Ted English, the executive chairman at Bob’s.</p>
<p>Helping oversee a company with over 5,000 employees, it is impossible for Ted to remember everyone’s name and role – but there is one specific employee he makes sure he never forgets to check in on. Meet Alexa. </p>
<p>“Everytime I do Special Olympics, he always comes to me and says, ‘I want to see your medals, I want to see pictures.’ He’s great,” said Alexa. </p>
<p>“Everyone here is supportive of Special Olympics and I love it,” Alexa added.</p>
<p>Alexa is an accounts payable clerk and she works in the mailroom, helping to deliver mail at headquarters in Manchester, Connecticut. She always has a smile on her face and loves her job at Bob’s. </p>
<p>She also loves to compete as a member of the Glastonbury Special Olympics team. In the winter she competes in snowshoe racing and in the summer she competes in track and field and focuses on sprinting. Ted makes sure to stop by her desk to see how everything went no matter what season it is. </p>

<p>Bob’s has partnered with Special Olympics for our Café Collections for a Cause program since 2014. In that time, Bob’s, with your generous support, has donated close to $450,000 to Special Olympics.</p>
<p>For those of you who are not familiar with my Café Collections for a Cause program, every quarter I select a nonprofit to raise money for and invite customers to donate money at any of my 150+ Cafés across the country. At the end of the quarter, I add up the money and provide a dollar-for-dollar match up to $75,000. So, the more you give, the more I give!</p>
<p>In 2022, we are collecting donations for Special Olympics during the second quarter. All of the money donated between April 1 and June 30 will be presented to Special Olympics. </p>
<p>Bob’s is proud to employ a number of Special Olympians in our stores across the country.</p>
<p>“Bob’s Discount Furniture is really proud of the diverse workforce we have, one that’s representative of our customers,” said Joe Genduso, director of management development with Bob’s Discount Furniture. “It’s really an all inclusive environment that’s welcoming of different backgrounds and different abilities.”</p>

In the winter she competes in snowshoe racing and basketball and in the summer she competes in track and field and focuses on sprinting. “My favorite is the relay and the 100M dash because I’m a sprinter and I like to sprint,” said Alexa. Ted makes sure to stop by her desk to see how everything went no matter what season it is.</p>

<p>Chuck Yenkner was nearing the end of his shift at Bob’s Discount Furniture in Southington, Connecticut when he made a stop in the breakroom.</p>
<p>He quickly unzipped the top pocket of his backup and pulled out a blue screwdriver.</p>
<p>“Mr. Screwdriver,” said Yenkner. “This was a Christmas gift from a friend.”</p>
<p>Chuck received the screwdriver as a gift from a former job coach with MARC, Inc.</p>
<p>“This helps me with the handles and the knobs,” explained Chuck. </p>
<p>With over 16 years of experience as a member of the cleaning crew at Bob’s in Southington, CT, Chuck has a well-deserved reputation as a hard-worker and he’s also earned a nickname that he’s very proud of – The Handle Doctor. </p>
<p>One of Chuck’s roles at Bob’s is to remove the small strips of plastic that mark the location of handles and knobs on furniture in the Outlet. He removes the plastic piece and secures the handles and knobs to the front of the furniture.</p>
<p>“I’m The Handle Doctor,” exclaimed Chuck.</p>

<p>Chuck has worked at the Southington location for the past 16 years as part of a collaboration with <a href="https://www.marcct.org/">MARC, Inc.</a>, based in Manchester, Connecticut. MARC, Inc., provides opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to lead meaningful lives of independence, choice, inclusion and continuous personal growth. </p>
<p>“Bob’s Discount Furniture is proud to employ a diverse workforce that is a representation of our customers,” said Joe Genduso, director, management development. “We are an inclusive environment that welcomes people of all backgrounds and abilities. Chuck is a hard worker, a dedicated employee and we are glad to have him as part of the Bob’s team.”</p>
<p>The oldest of three children, Chuck has down syndrome. He’s a loyal employee who works Monday-Friday as a member of Southington’s cleaning crew.</p>
<p>“This job is important to me,” said Chuck. “I make lots of good money here at Bob’s and the people are nice.”</p>
<p>“It’s hard work, but it’s my life.”</p>
<p>Evelyn Barnes, a job coach with MARC, Inc., said the work program gives Chuck and his colleagues a sense of independence and confidence.</p>
<p>“It gives him a good opportunity to show that just because they have a disability doesn’t mean that they have to be left behind and closed away from the environment,” said Barnes.</p>

<p>With nearly two decades of experience, Chuck has developed a fluid daily routine at work. He knows exactly how long each task should take him and at what time in the morning he should be done with certain jobs.</p>
<p>The first task of his day is to mop the floor in the hallway between the showroom and the Outlet. After that, he heads over to the breakroom to mop the floor and empty trash. A quick check of his watch, while he’s finishing up in the breakroom, shows that he’s on schedule.</p>
<p>Chuck then empties the trash in the Outlet and puts new plastic bags in the trash cans.</p>
<p>“I always put them in the right way and nice and tight,” said Chuck.</p>
<p>Following a brief break, Chuck sweeps the floor in the Outlet before tackling his final task of the day – handles and knobs. </p>
<p>He walks around the rows of dressers and chests to remove the plastic tags and flip the handles and knobs from the inside of the doors to exterior-facing so the customers can use them.</p>

<p>Chuck is a member of the Glastonbury Special Olympics team. Nearly 30 years ago he joined the track team and since then he has competed in a sport every season. In the summer he continues to compete in track and now he also has picked up croquet. Chuck has also participated in unified softball. In the winter, he’s a member of the unified basketball team and the alpine skiing team</p>
<p>.In February of 2020, he competed in the Special Olympics Connecticut Winter Games at <a href="https://powderridgepark.com/">Powder Ridge in Middlefield, CT</a>. Chuck won silver in the Alpine Advanced Giant Slalom.</p>

<p>Over 120 athletes from around the Nutmeg state competed in the games on Feb. 22 and 23 that included snowboarding and a variety of skiing activities.</p>
<p>“The athletes love these games,” said Michelle Zettergren, board chair, <a href="https://www.soct.org/">Special Olympics Connecticut</a>. “It’s an opportunity for them to be part of something bigger. You can feel the camaraderie. You can feel the excitement. Our teams are proud, our athletes are proud regardless of where they land in the competition. They’re so happy just to be able to participate and compete and to be able to work with each other.”</p>

<p>In 2015, Chuck traveled to Los Angeles to compete in the Special Olympics World Games. He won a gold medal in the mini javelin, bronze in the 100M run and a ribbon in the 4x100M relay.</p>
<p>Tina Yenkner, Chuck’s mother, said Special Olympics has given her son a good sense of community and a big social circle of friends and family to spend time with.</p>
<p>“I think [Special Olympics] makes him feel good about himself and his accomplishments,” said Tina. “It provides him opportunities that he wouldn’t see otherwise in regular sports.”</p>

<p>I just had to include this quick story about Chuck that his mom shared as it really speaks to his character – plus it made me smile when I heard it :)!</p>
<p>Tina said when Chuck was in high school he attended a roundtable session with a guidance counselor and all the students were asked if they could change anything in their life, what would it be. As the discussion made its way around the group, students shared what they would change: one student wore glasses and said they didn’t want to wear glasses and another student said they didn’t want to have down syndrome.</p>
<p>And then it was Chuck’s turn.</p>
<p>“They came to Chuck and they said, ‘Chuck, what would you change’ and he said, ‘nothing’. It surprised me,” Tina recalled. </p>
<p>“He wears glasses, he’s down syndrome, none of those things seem to bother him. He’s pretty happy in his life and I think it’s everything that he gets to do that makes him that way. Special Olympics being a big part.”</p>
