<p>I have a really simple quiz for you. Just one question, but the answer might surprise you!</p>

<p>What do you call the item in your <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="living room (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=livingroomhyperlink" target="_blank">living room</a> or <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/living-room-sets?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=familyroomhyperlink" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="family room (opens in a new tab)">family room</a> that you and another person or two might sit on to visit or watch a movie? I see you reaching for your phone. No cheating now. Step away from all electronic devices and use that big computer above your shoulders. Have your answer? Ready, set go… </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/sofas/p/20038546011?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=artisansofaphoto" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img decoding="async" width="687" height="320" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/artisan-687x320.jpg" alt="My Artisan Sofa features Bob-O-Pedic Memory Foam and nailhead details | Bob's Discount Furniture" class="wp-image-45" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/artisan-687x320.jpg 687w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/artisan-687x320-300x140.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px" /></a><figcaption>Artisan Sofa</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Most of you folks probably blurted out “<a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="couch (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=couchhyperlink" target="_blank">couch</a>,” while others might have said “<a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/living-room-sets?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=sofahyperlink " target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="sofa (opens in a new tab)">sofa</a>.” And some fancy pants might have shouted out “settee.” (don’t think I didn’t hear that!) </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img decoding="async" width="687" height="320" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub2_687x320.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-47" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub2_687x320.jpg 687w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub2_687x320-300x140.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px" /></figure></div>

<p>In many respects, everybody is right.</p>

<p>I know, so anti-climatic. But – this is the part where things get interesting – there are some distinct differences between a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="sofa (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/living-room-sets?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=sofahyperlink" target="_blank">sofa</a> and a <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=couchhyperlink" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="couch (opens in a new tab)">couch</a>. Keep on reading if you want some fun facts for the daily morning meeting at the water cooler or go lay down on your sofa, or is it couch? I gotcha now.</p>

<p>The word sofa derives from the Arabic word suffah that means a <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/home-decor/c/benches?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=benchhyperlink" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="bench (opens in a new tab)">bench</a>. There is also Turkish influence from the word sofa that roughly translates to a portion of the floor that is raised and covered with carpets and cushions. The origin of the word sofa can be traced back to the 1620s. The word couch can be traced back to the 1300s and derives from the old French verb couchier which means to lay down.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="687" height="320" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub3_687x320.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-48" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub3_687x320.jpg 687w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub3_687x320-300x140.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px" /></figure></div>

<p>I get it, you just want to relax, but, you can start to see some of the differences. Sofa has a more sophisticated association with it while a couch is simply a place to lie down. So let’s put on that cool little detective hat like in the old movies and dig into this a little more. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="477" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1374x640-1024x477.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-49" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1374x640-1024x477.jpg 1024w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1374x640-300x140.jpg 300w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1374x640-768x358.jpg 768w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1374x640-1168x544.jpg 1168w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1374x640.jpg 1374w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure></div>

<p>Did you know there are multiple styles of sofa arms? Think you can name them all? Learn about them <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)" href="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/all-about-sofa-arms/?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=sofaarmshyperlink" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="687" height="320" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub4_687x320.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-50" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub4_687x320.jpg 687w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/sub4_687x320-300x140.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 687px) 100vw, 687px" /></figure></div>

<p> There are differences between a <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="sofa (opens in a new tab)" href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/living-room-sets?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=sofahyperlink" target="_blank">sofa</a> and a <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=couchhyperlink" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="couch (opens in a new tab)">couch</a>, but a lot of the use just comes down to semantics. Here is the boiled-down Bob’s notes version:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>A sofa is larger, more sophisticated and a gathering place for conversation.</li><li>A couch is smaller, more functional and a comfy place to lie down.</li><li>Who knew a 2-foot puppet had so much knowledge?</li></ul>

<p>Shop <del>couches</del>&#8230;err&#8230; <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaorcouch&amp;utm_content=sofashyperlink" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label=" (opens in a new tab)">sofas</a> now!</p>

<p>Do you think you can name all the different styles of sofa arms? Go ahead, give it a try! </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaarms&amp;utm_content=rollarmphoto " target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="341" height="350" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ashton.jpg" alt="The roll arm is a classic traditional style | Bob's Discount Furniture" class="wp-image-56" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ashton.jpg 341w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/ashton-292x300.jpg 292w" sizes="(max-width: 341px) 100vw, 341px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>The Roll Arm<br><br></strong>This versatile arm features a traditional or transitional style and is an all-time furniture classic, as one of the oldest styles around. The soft contours of this sofa arm offer a natural shape that lends a smooth and sophisticated look, giving any room a relaxed and comfortable feel. The roll arm mixes well with any style and fits well into almost any home. Long live the roll arm!</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaarms&amp;utm_content=englisharmphoto" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="315" height="340" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/hampton.jpg" alt="The English arm is traditionally a formal silhouette that has a low-lying arm | Bob's Discount Furniture" class="wp-image-58" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/hampton.jpg 315w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/hampton-278x300.jpg 278w" sizes="(max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>The Transitional English Arm</strong> <br><br>The English arm is traditionally a formal silhouette that has a distinctive low-lying arm and deep comfortable seating, offering serious style and elegance that&#8217;s all in the details! A classic beauty with soft curves are traditionally paired with t- cushions to create a compact and seamless look that make this perfect for any size space. Variations occur with the English arm in height, roll style and with or without ruching.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaarms&amp;utm_content=trackarmphoto" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="332" height="350" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/greyson.jpg" alt="The track arm features clean contemporary lines | Bob's Discount Furniture" class="wp-image-59" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/greyson.jpg 332w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/greyson-285x300.jpg 285w" sizes="(max-width: 332px) 100vw, 332px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>The Track Arm</strong><br><br>Clean contemporary lines make up the modern and always chic track arm. Square edges make this profile a smart choice for smaller spaces- with no curves to take up extra room. The track arm on a sofa or chair can be dressed up or down and will remain a timeless addition to all spaces. The track arm may seem simple, but it lends a bold and refreshing statement through its shape and horizontal lines.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaarms&amp;utm_content=flairarmphoto" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="327" height="336" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/piper.jpg" alt="The flair arm is a deep, cozy, easygoing and elegant all in one arm |  Bob's Discount Furniture" class="wp-image-60" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/piper.jpg 327w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/piper-292x300.jpg 292w" sizes="(max-width: 327px) 100vw, 327px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>The Flair Arm</strong><br><br>Deep, cozy, easygoing and elegant all in one arm! This chair and sofa arm typically sits high but ranges in heights and can be squared off vertically or have a straight flair. Designed for relaxation with a modern appeal the flair arm is a sure-fire furniture classic that will stand the test of time.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaarms&amp;utm_content=slopearmphoto" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="350" height="350" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/colby.jpg" alt="The slope arm has strong lines and deep curves for a glamorous look | Bob's Discount Furniture" class="wp-image-61" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/colby.jpg 350w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/colby-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/colby-300x300.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>The Slope Arm<br><br></strong>Open and elegant, this style has strong lines and deep curves for a glamorous look. A modern silhouette with an inviting lounge-like feel that has proven a furniture classic. These confident curves of the slope arm give distinctive lines and ample cushion for the perfect combination of style and comfort.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaarms&amp;utm_content=cushionarmphoto" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="313" height="332" src="https://mybobs.wpengine.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nevada.jpg" alt="The cushion arm has overstuffed padded arms | Bob's Discount Furniture" class="wp-image-62" srcset="https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nevada.jpg 313w, https://www.mybobs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/nevada-283x300.jpg 283w" sizes="(max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px" /></a></figure></div>

<p><strong>The Cushion Arm</strong><br><br>Overstuffed padded arms offer the ultimate indulgence for casual comfort. Often oversized with large seat cushions that embrace you, the cushion arm is a crowd pleaser! Masculine style with ample comfort makes an oversized statement and looks well- proportioned in large open rooms. The cushion sofa arm straddles the line between traditional and contemporary with overall flexible style to fit a multitude of spaces.</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<p style="text-align:center"><strong>Love your look no matter the arm! Mix styles to create a collected over time transitional look.<br>Score big and shop all <a href="https://blog.mybobs.com/furniture/living-room/c/sofas?utm_medium=content&amp;utm_source=BobsBlog&amp;utm_campaign=sofaarms&amp;utm_content=sofahyperlink" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="sofas (opens in a new tab)">sofas</a> while staying budget-savvy. </strong></p>
