Finding the Best Furniture for Small Spaces
Furnishing a small apartment or city condo can be a challenge. Not only can it be hard to find the right furnishings to fit in your smaller space, it can also be difficult to identify pieces that will maximize the space and that are aesthetically pleasing.
Here are a few tips for making the most out of your small space:
Use a loveseat and a chair or a loveseat and ottoman in place of a larger sofa or sectional. When paired with a chair, a loveseat can be used in place of a larger sofa to free up some floor space for a coffee and end table. When paired with an ottoman, you can stretch out, use the ottoman like a table, or move it out of the way when it isn’t being used.
Spread your lights out and aim them up. In small spaces, projecting light up and out will make a room feel larger. Instead of using traditional lamps that direct light downward, consider investing in floor lamps that you can put in the corners of your space.
Use furniture with concealed storage. This one seems obvious, but it’s a tip that many people forget; if the base of your loveseat doubles as a storage drawer, it gives you a place for blankets, books that are just collecting dust or knick-knacks from your kitchen that you just don’t use that often. Beds with footer drawers can supplement a smaller bureau.
Use mirrors! Mirrors don’t just make your space look bigger by reflecting your space, they also reflect light. As mentioned above, the brighter your room is, the bigger it will look. Mirrors can make great accent pieces on your wall, too!
Leave space between the wall and your furniture. This may seem like it would make your space feel smaller, but pulling your furniture away from the wall actually creates the illusion that there is more space in the room.
