BOB’S DISCOUNT FURNITURE’S CELEBRATE THE ARTS CONTEST
AWARDS $35,000 IN CULTURAL GRANTS
Seven schools in seven states win money for cultural arts programming

(Manchester, CT) September 17, 2010 – Bob's Discount Furniture, through its Bob’s Outreach program, announced today the winners of its 5th annual Celebrate the Arts contest.  In an effort to support and maintain dance, music and the arts in schools this year, Bob's Outreach is awarding $35,000 in cultural grants to deserving schools throughout the Northeast.

This year, Bob’s Discount Furniture received thousands of submissions from parents, students, teachers, administrators and community members.  In each of the seven states where the company operates (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI) Bob’s Outreach has selected one K-12 school to win a $5,000 grant to be used for cultural arts assemblies during the 2010-2011 school year.  As part of the contest, each winning school will get a special delivery from Cathy Poulin, Public Relations Director and Bob’s TV personality, and the outreach team who will award the grant and visit with students and faculty.

"It’s so important to find ways to get art and cultural education programming into our schools,” explained Cathy. “At Bob’s we want to help provide positive and enjoyable educational experiences for youth, and with many school budgets being cut, this year our support is needed more than ever.  We’re thrilled to award these grants, giving the winning schools an opportunity to put $5,000 to work in support of programs of their choosing."

This year’s lucky winners are:

•    Union School, Unionville, CT
•    Advanced Math & Science Academy Charter School, Marlborough, MA
•    Montello Elementary School, Lewiston, ME
•    Littleton High School, Littleton, NH
•    South Amboy Elementary School, South Amboy, NJ
•    St. John the Baptist School, Yonkers, NY
•    Bernard F. Norton Elementary School, Cumberland, RI

“We are absolutely thrilled,” said Principal Paula Maloney of the Bernard F. Norton Elementary School in Cumberland, RI.  “We expect to offer more after school classes, we will make such good use of it,” Maloney explained. In the past, the school never had sufficient funds to offer any sort of cultural extracurricular programs.

Sister Mary Alice, principal of the St. John the Baptist School in Yonkers, NY explained that one of her student’s mothers heard about the contest and entered the school.  “This is very exciting for us!” she said.  “I am talking with the music and arts teachers to decide what we are going to do with the money. We have a new theater program and a robotics program that needs a lot of equipment, the money will definitely help there.”
